Dogman is a tale of hope. Hope that sometime during its 114 minutes of runtime, it will get better. Competing for Venice’s Golden Lion, Dogman is as much of a best bet as its protagonist is a people person.

Poor Things: Stone is on the loose in (and sensational)
Poor Things, an eccentric story of self-discovery by Yorgos Lanthimos, is perhaps his most impressive monster. An eclectic Victorian exploration of resurrection and identity is centred around Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by a scientist (Willem Dafoe), Godwin Baxter. Her almighty surrogate father goes by “God” because, to her, he is one.

During the awards ceremony held on Friday 8, the 27TC Jury handed out the 2023 GdA Directors’ Award to Ariane Louis-Seize.
French-Canadian filmmaker Ariane Louis-Seize wins the Giornate degli Autori award; the Europa Cinemas Label goes to Photophobia and the Audience Award to Through The Night.

This year’s 28th member and president of the Giornate degli Autori 27 Times Cinema Jury is Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues. His first film, O Fantasma, premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was followed by other films such as The Ornithologist, To Die Like a Man, or the latest Will-o’-the-Wisp, which was nominated for last year’s Lux Audience Award.

Giorgio Gosetti is the General Delegate of the Giornate degli Autori, the parallel section of the Venice Film Festival. I had the pleasure to conduct this interview with him during the final days of this intensive period, so I could ask him about the selection process of the films that I had to judge as a member of the 27 Times Cinema jury.

Experiencing Film Festivals from a Critic’s perspective
Late night screenings, early morning delivery’s, quick turnarounds and an editor on your back. I had never experienced this buzz during a film festival but was very glad to have been given exactly this opportunity. Run by Stanislas Ide and Jesus Silva Vilas, both independent film critics who freelance for various outlets, the workshop was designed for the 27 Times Cinema participants to formulate our thoughts, write the copy and deliver within the tight deadlines a Film Critic can face.

Accessibility might be a concept which may sound familiar to the contemporary ear. Especially with the barrage of information that we as members of the 21st century have to be constantly bombarded with, you know the drill, the dings, the tweets, and of course, TikTok. Accessibility is defined as ‘the act of being able to be reached or obtained easily’, and while we might think that through today’s advancement in technology we have grasped this concept, Federico Spoletti might make you think twice.

Juries off-duty!

As part of the 27 Times Cinema project, we had the opportunity to attend a Social Media Masterclass led by Megan Mitchell, a Scottish young and enthusiastic Producer and Programmer for Matchbox Cine. The class covered how to develop strategies to reach a wider, diverse audience, making cinema more inclusive and inviting.
