Terry Ready For International U-Turn, Will Hodgson Oblige?

John Terry quit England in September 2012 after the FA found him guilty of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand even though the then-England captain was cleared of all charges by a court. However, the 33-year-old is seemingly ready to make himself available again for England in a bid to feature in next summer’s World Cup in Brazil as reported by Yahoo! Eurosport.

Even without Terry to marshal the defence, the Three Lions were undefeated in qualifying to top their group and safely make it to the World Cup finals. Hodgson is expected to make Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka his first-choice central defensive pairing at the World Cup and one could argue that neither defender is better than Terry.

However, it is unknown whether Hodgson would welcome Terry with open arms. He has previously spoken about building towards the future and even ignored Rio Ferdinand for Euro 2012 due to ‘footballing reasons.’

In November 2013, Hodgson said regarding Terry’s U-turn, “John retired a long time ago, right at the start of our qualifying campaign. We have played nine games without him. We have qualified without losing a game. I think Cahill and Phil Jagielka have done a good job at centre-back. Chris Smalling showed [against Germany] he is a very good centre-back in the making. Phil Jones is there as well. It is time to keep moving forward rather than turning back.”

So the England coach has spoken and it seems it is only looking forward.
