Our service team is here to advise you on all your service needs, providing quality Subaru auto service and car repair to our customers from Brattleboro, Keene NH, Claremont, Northampton and beyond.  Our maintenance schedules are designed around Subaru factory recommendations. All of New England is considered to a "severe duty climate" and thus some of our recommendations can be changed to meet your individual driving and maintenance needs.  We may also make recommendations based on our experience and what we know can happen when certain repairs/maintenance items are not addressed.

Charging system test...your Subaru Battery should be tested to ensure it will start when you need it most. Our state of the art GR8 tester will put your battery to the test and make sure it will work when you turn the key.  We will also inspect the battery terminals and cables for signs of corrosion. If there is a blue/white crusty substance on your battery its a good indicator that you should have your battery cleaned and tested.

Wiper Blades- Subaru offers a heavier winter wiper blade which will perform better in the
snowy/icy weather.  When cold weather hits and ice build up or snow piling up starts to happen it is best to let the car warm up and clean your wipers prior to turning them on. If the wipers are frozen then it could cause damage to your wiper motor and/or transmission leaving you without a good working system.

Cooling System Check. Its always a good idea to let us test the antifreeze for freeze protection and ensure it is set for colder winter temperatures.  If the coolant is not set at the proper strength then severe engine damage can occur. We will inspect your coolant hoses for signs of wear, loose clamps and inspect your radiator for damage or missing fins to ensure that your cooling system is ready to perform when you need it most. Subaru recommends these inspections every 12,000 miles.

Alignment. We recommend having your alignment checked prior to heading into the winter months so your tires are not wearing unevenly and they last and perform as you need them to.  We also inspect for worn out suspension and steering components to ensure you are safe on the road. We recommend performing a 4 wheel alignment at least every 12 months or 12,000 miles.

Tires should be inspected to ensure proper tread depth, even wear and to ensure there are no dry rot cracks.  Low tire tread depth will result in poor traction in the snow. Worn or choppy tires are an indicator that something in the suspension or steering may be worn out or maybe its just time for a wheel alignment. Dry rot cracking happens over time and seriously compromises the safety of the tire. Dry rot tires should be replaced as soon as you see signs. Subaru recommends tire rotations every 6 months or 6,000 miles to give your tires the longest life.

Engine belts should be inspected for signs of wear or tiny cracks in the belt itself. If cracks or glazing are present it is recommended to replace the engine belt(s) prior to them breaking and leaving you stranded on the side of the road. Subaru recommends inspecting these every 12 months or 12,000 miles.

We would like to shed a little light on some common questions we hear from our customers.  Our answers are based on Subaru Factory recommended service and our extensive training and experience.  Our shop is host to technicians, service manager, parts manager and parts consultant with over 200 years of combined automotive experience....  that is a lot of knowledge under one roof.  We will always do our best to answer your questions but from time to time even we get stumped and we aren't afraid to say we don't know instead of making up a reason and we will make every effort to find the answer. So, on with the questions ...

Why do I have to change my oil every 6 months or 6,000 miles? Subaru recommends changing the oil based on time or mileage due to engine oil breaking down over time.
Conventional motor oil needs to be changed every 3 months or 3,000 miles while Synthetic motor oil needs to be changed every 6 months or 6,000 miles. The job of engine oil is to clean, lubricate and cool the engine. If the oil starts to break down or hold moisture it will not do it's job as effectively and over time this will cause wear and tear on the engine that may cause it to have a shorter life expectancy or need major repairs down the road.

Why do I need to rotate the tires every 6 months or 6,000 miles? Subaru recommends tire rotations so that you get the maximum life and optimum performance out of your tires. If tires are not rotated regularly they can start to show signs of cupping, choppiness or uneven wear, these can also be signs of an alignment issue.  When tires are rotated regularly they tend to last a lot longer, wear evenly and offer better performance when it counts.

Why do you recommend a 4 wheel alignment every 12 months or 12,000 miles?  New England roads are tough on your Subaru's suspension and steering. Struts, tie rods, ball joints, steering bushings and links all wear out faster here in New England from temperature and road conditions.  Let's face it our roads here are pretty harsh, isn't that why you chose a Subaru?

What is the cabin/hepa filter and why should I change it every 12 months or 12,000
miles? The cabin/hepa air filter is part of your heating and cooling system. It is the filter that helps prevent excessive dirt and debris from making it into the passenger compartment. If it does it's job properly it needs to be changed out regularly to keep the air filtering into the car as clean and fresh as possible. A blocked or plugged filter will not be effective and can often times begin to generate an unpleasant musty, mildew odor in the passenger compartment.
