Oakland: Port Shutdown for Palestine 13 Jan

Latest: Pickets shut the port for the night shift as well, making a full 24 hr shutdown.

Earlier: The whole port of Oakland is shutdown with 3,000 pickets!! We are shutting down the whole port not just ZIM and military cargo. This is a protest against Israel and the U.S. gov’t without which this genocidal war could not happen. Biden, Blinken and Austin are war criminals that’s why so many protesters turned out. Tonight the employers may try to work the port. The picket will continue for the nightside dispatch of jobs. I think there may be a showdown if police are sent in.

There was supposed to be a mass picket Saturday AM. The employers PMA found out and canceled all jobs for dispatch from the union hall. This was a victory for the protesters against the war in Gaza! Jack Heyman.

Solidarity message: Congratulations to everyone on the picket, to AROC for organising, and to all those ILWU members honoring the picket. This action, and others which it may spark, is the one thing that Netanyahu, Gallant, Biden, Blinken, Sunak, Starmer et al never imagined: that workers all over the world might make the Palestinian cause their own, and turn a genocidal war into a class war. Solidarity from Liverpool. Greg Dropkin.

Inside the secret talks to end nurse and ambulance strikes (BBC)

Questions for healthworkers, partly answered by the BBC report "Inside the secret talks":

  • Was there any discussion by union members of what would happen if the government agreed to talk, and what the "red lines" were for negotiation?
  • Was there feedback to members during the talks, or only after reaching agreement with a recommendation to accept?
  • Was there any consultation with stewards / branch secs between the negotiators reaching agreement and the leadership recommending it?
  • Or was it all done inside a magic circle?
  • Do members accept that?

IDC statement on Liverpool Dockers Strike

The International Dockworkers Council - IDC, an organisation representing over 140,000 dockers worldwide, hereby communicates its full support for the demands of the Liverpool dockers.
As an international organisation based on solidarity among workers, IDC does not rule out taking action to defend the interests of the Liverpool dockers, dismantling any attempt by the companies to undermine the strike legally organized by UNITE THE UNION for September 19, 2022, where IDC will be present reinforcing the picket line.
IDC is also mediating to unblock the conflict.
We recall that this is a conflict of wage parity, requesting a wage increase in line with inflation in the country.

Jimmy Nolan

Sad News Jimmy Nolan has Passed Away…
Jimmy Nolan letter to ILWU - 18 November 1997

Letter to Jimmy Nolan 23 January 2021

Excerpt from Solidarity, Global Restructuring and Deregulation: The Liverpool Dockers’ Dispute 1995-98, by Monica Clua Losada

The need for internationalism grew from the stark realisation that the way in which dockworkers in Liverpool had fought previous struggles was no longer going to be effective. The world in which they operated had changed radically. In 1967 and 1989, they were not alone and they were not just fighting their employer. Their struggle was not localised, but rather part of the struggle of many other British dockers against both their employers and the regulatory (or deregulatory) changes initiated by the government. This time it was just them and the employer and they were only a few. It was in this sense, that shop stewards’ chairman Jimmy Nolan, recollecting his previous international experience, launched the idea of an international initiative in a pub conversation amongst the shop stewards.

Nolan’s idea got the ball rolling. The dockworkers already had contacts, and the support groups that had started to be formed in Britain, particularly the Merseyside support group and some of the initiators of the London support groups, had contacts in the international Trotskyist movement. The international campaign was based upon three pillars: the dormant international contacts amongst dockworkers, the international Trotskyist movement and the Liverpool dockworkers themselves creating ‘flying pickets’. At the same time, a fourth factor started to become prominent, the use of the Internet. At this stage the coordination of these four factors was not necessarily a coherent strategy, but rather the attempt to utilise everything available...

History: the Namibian uranium blockade on Liverpool docks

Mike Carden, who died on 9 December, was a shop steward in the T&GWU 567 clerical section on Liverpool docks, elected to the union’s General Executive Council, and one of the leaders during the sacked Liverpool dockers dispute 1995-98. He had a direct and immediate understanding of the class conflict at work, and saw far beyond Liverpool.

Up to 1,000 People Protest Unloading of Israeli Ship in Oakland (NBC)

Stop ZIM Action Committee 4 June: The Volans left the Port of Oakland earlier this afternoon. Longshoremen and port truckers honored the picket lines, and the ship left unworked. It looks like the Bay Area has now organized the only successful labor action anywhere in the world - to date - against the atrocities in Gaza. The Stop ZIM Action Committee is continuing to monitor the situation. We hope other West Coast ports will refuse to work the Volans. The Stop ZIM Action Committee would like to thank the longshoremen of Local 10, the ships' clerks of Local 34 and the port truckers for honoring the picket. line, and the Block the Boat Coalition for their role in making the picket happen.

The Journal of Commerce reports that "Due to vessel delays in Oakland, Zim is suspending its premium trans-Pacific service until at least late July and is re-routing the service from Central China to call in Los Angeles-Long Beach."

The earlier action in Livorno, Italy reported on 17 May was successful, but the ship with military cargo for Israel was then unloaded in Naples. It is unclear if an action announced in Durban, South Africa, was in fact successful.

Stand with Palestinian workers in Gaza: a call for trade union solidarity

Excerpts

The Palestinian trade union movement, with support from with support from the Congress of South African Trade Unions and its affiliates, is unanimously calling on trade unions internationally to take immediate action to stop the Israeli massacre in Gaza and hold Israel to account for its crimes against the Palestinian people.

We ask you to consider the following actions:

  • Stop handling goods imported from or exported to Israel,
  • Divest your trade union pension — and other — funds from Israel Bonds as well as from corporations and banks that are complicit in Israel’s occupation and human rights violations
  • Dissociate from Israeli trade unions which are complicit in the occupation
  • Support our call for a military embargo on Israel
  • Share information with your members about the siege and destruction of Gaza and ask your members to boycott Israeli products and to share their knowledge with family, co-workers, and friends.

Today more than ever, solidarity with Palestinians workers and their families in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory is an essential component of progressive, principled trade union politics. Given the complete failure and unwillingness of governments to hold Israel accountable to international law there is widespread recognition that Israel’s occupation must be isolated by the pressure of civil society.

We rely on our brothers and sisters in the trade union movement internationally to continue a proud tradition of international solidarity and to stand with us as you stood with the struggle against apartheid in South Africa.

Issued by the following Palestinian trade unions:

Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions-Gaza
General Union of Palestinian Workers
Union of Professional Association
Federation of Independent Trade Unions

With the support of: Congress of South African Trade Unions
