Axarquia

Axarquia (pronounced Ax-ar-kia) is a region East of Malaga in Spain bordered by the Montes de Malaga, the Comarca of Antequera, the Province of Granada and the Mediterranean Sea. This comarca, or region, is full of contrasts. Snow capped mountain ranges to a height of 2000 metres look down over the beaches of the Costa del Sol. Moorish Mountain villages lie close to the tourist complexes equipped with the most modern amenities. Axarquia has a benign climate and a privileged geographical location with fertile valleys boasting a sub-tropical micro-climate full of tropical fruits. The first settlements here go back to prehistoric times, later dwellers included the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the most important period in the history of the area was the Moorish domination whose influence is still conserved in the layout of the villages, with their winding, steeply rising streets lined with white washed houses reflecting the bright sunshine.

Mountains and Coast. Warm and Fertile. Rural and Cosmopolitan. White and Blue. These are all terms to describe the region of La Axarquia in Spain. On the easternmost part of the Costa del Sol, Near Malaga. Velez-Malaga is the Capital of this region. Protected from the cold north winds by the mountain ranges of Alhama, Tejeda and Almiraja. La Maroma rising up to 2.065 metres, its gentle slopes speckled with vines and almonds.

The Axarquia has approx 25 kilometres of beaches, here is a list of some of the most popular. Playa de Torre del Mar, Playa de Las Palmeras en Caleta de Vélez, Playa del Faro en Caleta de Vélez, Playa de Valle-Niza y Almayate, Playa Bajamar, Playa de Pijil en Lagos, Playa de chilches, Playa de Benajarafe and last but not least the Nudist Beach in Almayate, Camping Nudista de Almayate where you can find 12 bungalows and 6 caravans to rent. Its open all year round and as well as the beach there are pistas de petanca, a social club with games table, swimming pool, jacuzzi, restaurant and snack bar, supermarket, internet connection with wi-fi, a childrens park and lots of other activities.
