Definition of major areas and regions

Notes:

As a result of the disintegration of the former USSR, the former Czechoslovakia and the former Yugoslavia and the reunification of Germany, the composition of several regions and major areas changed after 1990. For estimation purposes, the effects of these political changes were backdated to 1990 in all cases.

More developed regions: The more developed regions comprise Australia, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Northern America.

Less developed regions: The less developed regions comprise Africa, Asia (excluding Japan), Latin America and the Caribbean, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

Least developed countries: The group of least developed countries currently comprises 49 countries - Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kiribati, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Samoa, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Sudan, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Vanuatu, Yemen, Zambia. These countries are also included in the less developed regions.

Sub-Saharan Africa: The designation sub-Saharan Africa is used to indicate all of Africa exluding Algeria, Egypt, the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Morocco, Tunisia and Western Sahara.
