T-99 -  Games Of The Week

Click the highlighted round number for link to game. Go to GOTW to see all nominated games, all rounds, all tourneys for more detailed guru commentary.

Megasus continues as our GOTW guru. If only one or no nominations in a round, the guru will also choose a game from all the games he looked at from all sections, entitled Guru's Pick (GP).

R1 Salvatore 1/2 ElMaestroWe're starting off the season with a 110-move winner! Longest game of the week and the only one where both players still had winning chances up into the move 80's. A Sicilian Grand Prix breaks down into a pawn race; the mid-game without the Qs becomes very positional. W looked in control and had a R vs N at the end, but two too many pawns were enough to send it down a Drawing path.

R2 bobhill 0-1 fishhead - An entertaining game to watch. When Qside movement is stalled W's weakness on Kside is exploited. A chance to almost equalize, which may have worked or not, goes by the wayside because the wrong piece was traded. It still took time before Black could get on the winning path of capturing Qside pawns.

R3 vollmerJ 0-1 fireball - Entertaining to watch Live. W has a plan and executes it well from the start. Black is on his back heels most of the game but finds a way to keep countering W and keep the game even. When W's pawn-advance to a Q stalls a mistake allows Black to capture W's LSB . and hangs in there long enough to gain the winning advantage.

R4 Portoa 1-0 Megasus - Black's plan to control W's attack works for 50 moves. Then a mistake undoes all that and Black must scramble to even hope for a draw. W makes all the right decisions from there on and does not walk into a stalemate.

R5 Salvatore 0-1 fhunfiThe Q sac on move 25 by black, to me was stunning, because I thought it was a blunder! Worth a look.

R6 Toala 1-0 VisinA game where either player had chances to win right up until the last 2 moves.. Both players kept trying to find the right sequence to attack without weakening their defense. W was under the most pressure all game, but kept it equal until he got his winning chance.

P1 fishhead 0-1 timcent - After BxN on c3 , W plays to attack Kside along the b1-h7 diag. But Black breaks thru to W's back rank first, on b column and e column. Black stalls the mating threat on g7  and any Qside movement by W. After the Q trade, Black's extra pawn becomes a burden W can't overcome, even tho he captured the Black R from e column, and resigns.

What we are about

Sections for Teams of Experts, Novices, and Between!

Four to five players band together as a team, and compete in divisions of 4 – 7 teams in one of four ratings sections.  One round is played per week, for six weeks, from Tuesday to the following Tuesday.  Before each round, each captain decides which four players will play that week against players from the opposing team.

Paired players use a message board ("Game Forum") to discuss the day and time to play their game.  The game is played with a time control of 45 minutes + 45 second increments, rated, with assigned colors. After the round, the team with the most wins (Game Points) wins the round, and earns a Match Point. After six rounds of regulation play, the team with the most Match Points in each Division advances to the playoffs (1-4 more rounds) to determine the Section champions. Division and Section champion teams each earn one-month account extensions donated by ICC.  To join, follow the steps in:  Quick Guide.

Play fair and Play nice!

To ensure a friendly and safe environment for members to enjoy our team competition, Team 45 45 League issues sanctions of varying severity for behavior that "disrupts the peaceful enjoyment of the league by its participants." All league games are reviewed for possible assistance. Anyone who receives a red card for suspected cheating is reported to speedtrap.  League sanctions are summarized in The Docket.
