The character was created by series producer Shonda Rhimes, and portrayed by actor Jesse Williams. Avery was a recurring character in the sixth season before being made an official series regular for season seven. He was introduced in the season six episode “Invasion” as a former surgical resident at Mercy West Hospital who joins the staff at Seattle Grace Mercy West after the merger.” Source
