Gifts for Zombie Lovers

So, you're friend/lover/family member/family doctor has a zombie fetish- a non-sexual zombie fetish (we hope anyway)- and you're trying to figure out what to get them for some sort of occasion where you want or would like to get them something, say it's their birthday, or you have to tell them they have terminal cancer, or something.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
You could just go to the store and get them the first thing you see with 'Dead' in the title.
It's a good thought...but poor execution.
For one thing, not every movie that starts or ends with Dead is a zombie movie. What if you accidentally bought your zombie loving sister Dead Ringers, an absolutely horrifying (for many reasons) horror movie about twin gynecologists?
Or got some shitty zombie movie for this girl you liked, only to have her laugh in your face and speed off with some pimply faced nerd who can tell his Romero from his Russo?
That would be embarrassing.
Which is why I made this list of the best gifts for zombie lovers. To prevent this from happening to anybody else, ever again.

GIFTS FOR THE ZOMBIE FILM BUFF or BUDDING FILMMAKER
If the guy or girl in question is a lover of zombie movies, then you've probably got your work cut out out for you. I'm not just talking about somebody who likes movies and has a horror flick or two- I'm talking a hardcore zombie nerd who has got multiple editions of Italian imports that were only released for a few months ten years ago in a country that no longer even exists.
This kind of person also tends to want to make zombie movies themselves- or at least, talks about doing so a lot. That's probably because some many zombie movies are so low budget and simply put together that literally ANYONE could do many of them.
As always when buying gifts, you'll want to find a way to casually inspect his or her collection to make sure you're not buying them things they already have- a distinct possibility in this situation.

  • Dawn of the Dead : Ultimate Edition. This is a hugely epic repackaging of Romero's Dawn of the Dead, containing virtually every version of the movie, and everything about it, you could ever want. There are 4 discs, containing three separate cuts, multiple audio commentaries, numerous behind the scenes vignettes, some useless fluff, and then two rather fascinating documentaries- one filmed during the making of the film back in 1979, and another retrospective one filmed in 2004. Both are profoundly illuminating about the both the craft of film making on a low budget, and the itself. Any self-respecting zombie lover will eat this up, espiecally since most of us bought the shitty early release DVD's of this film when they first came out.
  • Zombi 2 (25th Anniversary Version). This is solely for the snob, the hipster, the kind of person who carefully arranges the things the they own so that when you walk into their house or room you can see how much better their taste is then yours. Alright- so that's a bit harsh, there are people that actually enjoy this movie. I'm just not one of them. It's not fun, it's not creative, and except for a few nasty seconds here and there, it's not scary or gory. However- it's both super famous, yet obscure enough to a badge of honor among those who own it. This is easily the definitive version- containing enough cool extras, commentary, and documentary stuff to satisfy any zombie lover or wanna-be independent filmmaker. I would, however, like to say, that I would never buy this for anyone unless they were an ultra snob.

GIFTS FOR THE ZOMBIE READER
There is a ton of zombie comics and books out now, some of which are serious, some of which are hilarious (or trying to be), and some of which are just all around awesome. Any lover of all things dead will be pretty bowled over by the gifts that follow, provided they don't absolutely hate reading. In which case...why are you buying them something?

GIFTS FOR THE ZOMBIE GAMER
Zombies have a long history in games of being some useless side enemy that exists only to annoy the player, but lately they've been getting a lot of their own games and coming into thier own right as something more then a gimmick. Any one of these games will provide hours of entertainment for the zombie gamer in your life.
