10 Darfur Genocide Facts

Darfur, a part of western Sudan, was an independent sultanate before 1916.  Darfur is suffering from genocide since 2003 and thousands of people have been killed up till now. In fact, this genocide in Darfur is the war between Non-Arab Sudanese and Sudan government due to extra support of Arab Sudanese by government of Sudan and its injustice attitude with Non-Arab Sudanese. No doubt, many peace treaties have been signed between both parties since 2003. However, the result is still not completely satisfactory and situation of conflict is still as such. Here are some facts about Darfur Genocide.

1. Darfur conflict as Genocide

According to definition, Genocide is a destructive activity, either systematic or deliberative, against ant national, ethnic or religious group. Just after one and half year of starting Darfur conflict, it was declared as Darfur genocide due to terrible destruction of both property and lives of people. Collin Powel, The Secretary of State in United States, announced this war as genocide on 9 September, 2004.

2. Opponents of Darfur genocide

On one side of Darfur genocide, there are two non-Arab native movements called Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and Sudan Liberation Movement or Army (SLM/A). However, on the other side, there is Sudan government with Sudanese police and military.

3. Number of people Killed

There are two figures in front of us in terms of numbers of people killed in Darfur genocide. One is from Sudan government that is 19.500 dead persons, since the time of starting this conflict. However, other another figure is 400,000 killed people, that is from Coalition for International Justice.

4. Percentage of killing by government

The numbers of civilians killed by Sudan government by means of militia groups in Darfur genocide is more than 97 % of total killed persons.

5. Sexual violence

Another cruel impact of Darfur genocide is sexual violence against women of Darfur especially young girls. More than 80 % Darfur women are abused by sexual slavery over and over again.

6. Overcrowded Refugee Camps

Refugee camps for victims of Darfur genocide have become overcrowded and are even not safe places for refugees in terms of diseases and attacks. Today, more than 20 % of Darfur population is residing in these refugee camps.

7. Migration to Chad

A huge population of western Sudan is leaving Sudan and migrating to Chad, the neighbor country. Today, the numbers of migrants have become more than 250,000, but they are in front of further violence in Chad.

8. Death Rate of New Born

It has been estimated that almost 200 new born babies die just after the birth among 1000 babies, just due to lack of nutrition and healthy diet. However, many of those who survive, are suffering from physical and mental disabilities.

9. Rich but poor people

People of Sudan are rich as well as poor simultaneously. They are rich, as they have natural resources of oil and other minerals. However, being unavailability of these resources, they are poor.

10. Doha Peace Forum

From December 2010 to July 2011, many joint statements between government and JEM as well as SLM have been brought about. However, a final Darfur peace agreement between Sudan government  and LJM has been signed on July 6, 2011 at Duha.
