Current Work Status

DCAT’s primary program is called Building Sustainability into the Codes in which we explore approaches to creating a sustainable context for building codes, working with national regulatory and green building organizations. Specific groups served include:

  • Building code groups and code officials
  • Standards making organizations
  • Green building organizations
  • Construction and development community
  • Public service organizations

Current program areas are:

LEADERSHIP
  • Active member of U.S. Green Building Council:
    • National Board Member
    • Leader - Greening of the Codes Committee
    • Arizona USGBC Chapter member & Board Liaison
  • Editorial advisory board member of Natural Home & Environmental Building News magazines
  • Leadership role with International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and International Code Council (ICC)
EDUCATION THROUGH PUBLICATIONS
  • Regular column in ICBO’s Building Standards
  • Articles for natural building, building code, engineering, and sustainability focused periodicals
  • White papers on sustainability issues, systemic change, and regulatory issues
OUTREACH
  • Presentations at conferences, universities, and speaker series
  • Coordination of technical resources for conferences, such as:
    •  tours of natural buildings
    •  trainings on natural building techniques
RESOURCES AND INFORMATION
  • Web-based resources, including:
    • Forum for information, referral, and communication for sustainable building issues (under development)
    • Referrals to human and technical resources on alternative technologies, natural building, and code issues
    • Consulting services on alternative building systems, such as straw bale construction and on integrated design processes

WORKSHOPS

  • Technical workshops on alternative building materials & methods for local, regional, state, and national building code organizations
  • Training for the building and design communities on code-related issues
