WALTHAM "G.T. DIAL"  UP AND DOWN WIND INDICATOR POCKET WATCH PERFECTLY SERVICED  WHITE GF RAILROAD CASE 16 SIZE  1924

STOCK NUMBER# WALTHAM340-------I have for sale a perfectly serviced "Vanguard" grade, model 1908 pocket watch from the American Waltham watch factory near Boston Mass. This is a 16 size stem wind and lever set railroad pocket watch movement and one of the best produced at their factory. Across this white gold filled case is 53mm. The hands are thick railroad spade pieces and for this model. The dial is a military piece as it is marked "G.T" at the top of the sweep second circle and not many produced with this dial so really hard to come by. The wind up and down hand at the 12 position is to indicate how much time on the pocket watch is left so you know when to wind it. This is again a model 1908 grade, Vanguard movement with 23 clean and inspected jewels. Please notice all jewels are in solid raised gold jewel settings. The checkered damskeen pattern is crisp and excellent. This is a "Lossier" terminal hairspring which translate to less positional errors and indeed this is a fact. I have changed the main spring in this 16 size movement and as it has been service properly this piece keeps within a second or two in 24 hours all 6 positions as marked on the barrel bridge. The serial number for this serviced gem is 24,568,845 which places this "GT" dial up and down pocket watch to the year 1924. As clean as can be and keeps once again better than railroad time!

The middle case and two case bezels back and front are gold filled and across this display case is 55mm across so it is an 18 size by American standards. The hands are fancy pointer hands and original to this Peoria movement and dial. The crystal is glass and perfect on both sides. This is a stem wind and a lever set genuine movement and with 15 clean and inspected jewels.  Notice the jewels are all in large raised solid gold jewel settings. ZENITH ULTRA ULTRA PERFECT RARE SIGNED ZENITH CASE 16 SIZE, "RR-56"C.P.R. RAILROAD APPROVED 21 JEWELS NOT A SCRATCH ANYWHERE!!!!!!    1955

SOLD IN 48 HOURS !!!!

Peter Kushnir Was the master time keeper for C.P.R railroads and recently passed away in Montréal (2018)...He told me the entire story of the Zenith RR as he solely was responsible for bringing this piece into Canada for CPR serviced. I wrote a published article about this model and here is a short part of it and it was approved by Peter himself before he passed away... A master has died but his legend is bigger than life!

Re Zenith pocket railroad extra RR ( a short excerpt from my article)

Peter Kushnir former CPR master watchmaker ordered 1000 Zenith pocket watches and were to be delivered to him in 4 months. He designed with Zenith the movement and the dials were to be 500 pieces Montgomery style enamel and 500 pieces Canadian dials  with the 24 hour inner Arabic numbers and those 24 hr dials were sent to the Canadian west coast under the care of Vern Pickersgill I believe Winnipeg Manitoba.
I just was at Peters place (2018 in Montréal Quebec) and we discussed the "RR-56"over an hour about Zenith and how he designed this movement. This is all in short I will be writing a complete essay shortly on the Zenith RR-56 extra pocket watch..

Cheers to all

I am amazed how well this pocket watch works! I have had this piece now for two weeks and still keeps perfect time, Thank you for selling this piece to me.

I will pass this one down for many generations to come.

Sincerely Robert G Williston B.C Canada

(My Reply)

Yes Peter Kushnir and myself were best friends and sadly he passed away aprox 5 years ago and so did copious amounts of knowledge went with him as he was a master's master watchmaker, though he did pass much skills onto myself which has put me over the top and I still miss him and his deep Ukrainian accent.

Be well and healthy in this new year

Darryl :-)

WE UNDERSTAND "OLD SCHOOL"  CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!  289 241 3151  9 to 5  Eastern standard time pls

Hallo dear Darryl,   I didn't believe my eyes,  about that torpedo boat watch. You are truly a magician.
I don't know what to say , how to thank you.
Some time ago, i brought the watch to a local watchmaker here in Dorval  Darryl, just to get his opinion if the watch is indeed reparable.
He told me to forget it, he went on and told me that the mainspring had imploded lost its footing so to speak and in the process of the disastrous sudden unwinding, the spring somehow destroyed the safety housing of the main spring , therefore the Anker of the mainspring too had gone to hell in a hand basket so to speak Darryl.
So in all truth Darryl according to that local watchmaker ,without the appropriate new parts, which are not obtainable anymore, the watch was at it's. Point finale.  I wish I could make this here email available to many of your clientele. You repaired this rich in history ,second world war, navigational, Torpedo boat, chronometer. These fine and highly accurate (the latest cry of watch making at the time) chronometers served as the cornerstone in navigation on the high seas for the Americans in there hunt for Japanese warships. so without exaggeration, the life's of the marines depended on these fine outstanding time peaces.

Thank you so much Darryl.
And dear Darryl , please let me know what I owe you, I insist.

Greetings to you Darryl,       Klaus.

A fun little bit of pocket watch history...

If you were in the market for a watch in 1880, would you know where to get one? You would go to a store, right?
Well, of course you could do that, but if you wanted one that was cheaper and a bit better quality than most of the store watches, you went to the train station!
Sound a bit funny? Well, for about 500 towns across the northern United States, that's where the best watches were found.
Why were the best watches found at the train station?
The railroad company wasn't selling the watches, not at all, but the telegraph operator was.

Most of the time the telegraph operator was located in the railroad station because the telegraph lines followed the railroad tracks from town to town. It was usually the shortest distance and the right-of-ways had already been secured for the rail line. Most of the station agents were also skilled telegraph operators since that was the primary way that they communicated within the railway system. They would know when trains left the previous station, and when they were due at their next station.
It was the telegraph operator who had the watches. As a matter of fact, they sold more of them than almost all the stores combined for a period of about 9 years.
This was all initiated by a telegraph operator  known as "Richard". He was on duty in the North Redwood, Minnesota train station one day when a huge crate of pocket watches arrived from the East.
No one ever came to claim them. So Richard sent a telegram to the manufacturer and asked them what they wanted to do with the watches. The manufacturer didn't want to pay the freight back, so they wired Richard to see if he could sell them. So Richard did. He sent a wire to every railway agent in the system asking them if they wanted a cheap, but good, pocket watch. He sold the entire case in less than two days and at a handsome profit.
That started it all.
He ordered more watches from the watch company and encouraged the telegraph operators to set up a display case in the station offering high quality watches for a cheap price to all the travelers.
It worked! It didn't take long for the word to spread and, before long, people, other than travelers, came to the train station to buy watches. Richard became so busy that he had to hire a professional watch maker named "Alva" to help him with the orders.
And the rest is history as they say. The business took off and soon expanded to many other lines of dry goods. Richard and Alva left the train station and moved their company to Chicago -- and it's still there.
YES, IT'S A LITTLE KNOWN FACT that for a while in the 1880's, the biggest watch retailer in the country was at the train station.
It all started with a telegraph operator: Richard Sears and his partner Alva Roebuck!
Bet You Didn't Know That!!!
Now that's History!!!!!
