San Francisco Area Maps

These maps have been provided by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and National Park Service. The Parks Conservancy is the non-profit partner of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — an 80,600 acre swath of parkland north and south of the Golden Gate, including Muir Woods, Crissy Field, Alcatraz, the Marin Headlands, the Presidio, and 30 other sites.

In partnership with the National Park Service and Presidio Trust, the Parks Conservancy preserves these national parks, enhances the visitor experience, and builds a community dedicated to conserving the parks for the future. Visit www.parksconservancy.org to volunteer or become a member.

Maps for the Rest of the World

The following image links will allow downloading of sample maps at continental level. The maps have only few cities marked on them, and some of the cities may be in slightly off their actual locations. But these maps should show you some of the capabilities of the application. The map files have .kmz extension and they are basically zip files (preferably uncompressed) containing a map image (JPG or PNG) and its geographical coordinates (in a KML file). Those interested in creating their own maps should uncompress one of the sample maps, edit the map image, and then repackage it with the modified image.

The app allows you to create your own location-enabled maps as well based on existing map images. If you're traveling to, let's say, London, just (1) find a tourist map you have the necessary rights to copy and use; (2) download it to your phone; and (3) turn it into a location-enabled map using Custom Maps.

You may want to check the settings page on Custom Maps app to see what is the largest estimated image size your phone can handle without running out of memory (all phones can handle up to 3 megapixel images, but many modern phones with a lot of memory can handle even 24 megapixel images).
