Why CO2 capture and storage

Carbon dioxide (CO2) released through burning fossil fuels is considered as one of the main causes of human induced climate change. The EU’s objective is to reduce emissions of CO2 by 50% in the year 2020. Besides progress in energy efficiency and sustainable energy, like wind, solar and geothermal energy, CCS is a necessary step to combat global warming by reducing CO2 emissions. That is why the EU has declared CO2 capture and storage (CCS) as part of the solution for creating a successful sustainable energy policy

The capture and storage of CO2 provides a significant option to mitigate CO2 emissions, contributing to the achievement of Kyoto (and successor) targets in a world where economic growth will depend on fossil fuels for the next several decades. The EU has been investing in research and development projects that explore the possibilities of CCS for many years.

What is CCS

The process of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) consists of several steps: The capture , possible transport and storage of CO2 gas. These three technologies are all intensely researched and developed in Europe. A variety of capture technologies have been developed, such as post-combustion (capture of CO ... {read more}
