The CO2ReMoVe Project

The Sixth Framework Programme EU-project CO2ReMoVe (Research, Monitoring, Verification) is carried out by a consortium of industrial, research and service organizations, all with elaborate experience in CO2 geological storage. The consortium has the opportunity to integrate experience at a number of different storage sites - both industrial-scale and pilot-scale sites aimed at testing specific technologies - for optimal results.
 
CO2ReMoVe aims at creating a scientifically based reference for the monitoring and verification of CO2 geological storage. Through extensive R&D into monitoring, measurements and verification on multiple storage sites, CO2ReMoVE wants to prove the long term reliability and safety of geological CO2 storage. Another objective is to provide the R&D necessary to have a basis for monitoring and verification leading to guidelines for site certification and accepted standards for policy makers, regulators and industry. This is useful for CO2 storage to qualify in emission trading schemes.
 
CO2ReMoVe provides a basis for developing:
  • Methods for base-line storage site evaluation
  • New tools to monitor the behaviour of stored CO2
  • New tools to predict and model long term storage behaviour and risks
  • A risk assessment methodology for a variety of sites and time-scales
  • Guidelines for best practice for the industry, policy makers and regulators
The results of CO2ReMoVe will hopefully attribute to facilitating reliable and widespread application of CO2 geological storage.
 

Organisation

CO2ReMoVe is controlled by an Executive Board and a General Assembly. The project coordination is executed by TNO The Netherlands and the project management team consist of the coordinator and five sub-projectleaders from different partners. CO2ReMoVe started in 2006 and is scheduled to end in 2011.
 
The project is divided in the following five subprojects:

  2. Site performance assessment and remediation
  3. Interpretation, modelling and assessment of site monitoring datasets and monitoring tool development
  4. Best practice and contribution to guidelines
  5. Dissemination and Training

Site Datasets - Obtaining monitoring data for R&D purposes
