Men’s varsity basketball grabs fourth in the Les Curry Invitational

The Davis High varsity men’s basketball team put up a great fight, but Woodcreek edged out the Blue Devils with a 107-94 win in the 2013 Les Curry Invitational on Dec. 20. With the loss to Woodcreek, Davis was awarded fourth in the tournament.

The Blue Devils held back Woodcreek in the first half with the first quarter ending with a 30-18 Davis lead and the second quarter ending in 55-47.

According to Davis’ coach Dan Gonzalez, the Blue Devils were only hoping to contain the highly talented Woodcreek Timberwolves.

The Devils held onto its lead until the middle of the third quarter when Woodcreek started to grab more rebounds than the Blue Devils could handle. Even though DHS senior Brandon Strong and DHS junior Nate Curtis worked hard together to put up a shot after getting two rebounds each, Woodcreek finally closed the gap.

Woodcreek continued to creep up on the Blue Devils with a steal from Woodcreek’s Drew Nuls which was followed up with a three-pointer.

It wasn’t looking so great for the Blue Devil team that started off so strong. However, the team gave Woodcreek a run for its money at the end of the third quarter, ending with only a two point difference with Woodcreek in the lead.

“[Woodcreek] is an awfully talented team. It was a good test for us and not a bad game,” Gonzalez said.

Things were looking up for the Devils at the start of the final quarter when Woodcreek’s Noah Blackwell stole the ball and made a lay-up. Just a few minutes into the fourth and Davis was behind 10 points.

In a desperate last chance effort, the Blue Devils started to apply backcourt pressure. With fouls and steals by Woodcreek, the Blue Devils were unable to close the gap.

“The offense went well, but we played a tired defense,” said Curtis.

Gonzalez commented that the Blue Devil’s on-floor communication was not at its best and the team gave up too many easy points throughout the game.

DHS senior Matt Michaels played a strong game, making all eight of his free throws. The Blue Devils were also strong with three-pointers hit by Glen Welch, Ben Prussel, and Brett Bloomfield.
