25-strong pack of timber wolves hunting bison in northern Alberta
The new David Attenborough series, Frozen Planet starts this week on the BBC. I’m DELIRIOUSLY excited about it so am celebrating with a few still shots from the series.
In these two pictures, a huge pack of 25 timber wolves are on the hunt for bison.
Equal opportunities appear to have reached Alberta long before they reached the UK, as the wolf pack is led by the alpha FEMALE. Travelling single-file through the deep snow to save energy, the packs in the Wood Buffalo National Park are the only wolves in the world that specialise in hunting bison ten times their size.
After hours of pursuit and tension the pack force the herd to stampede, hoping that a yearling will stray or fall behind during the chaos. Apparently, the yearling in this photo escaped the wolves but was killed by another member of the herd that ran headlong into it.
