Troubleshooting issues with remote installation

Cannot Log In
The problem could be caused by insufficient access rights on target PC. For the remote installation of AVG it is required that target PC's local administrator's account is used, in domain networks it is recommended to use domain administrator account. Please note that the account must have specified non-blank password due to security reasons.

If the operating system of target PC is Windows XP, check following (and modify if it does not correspond):
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Local Security Policy -> Security settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options -> Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts:

  • default value: local users authenticate as guests
  • new value: local users authenticate as themselves

To prove this:

  • Open Start -> Run item on source computer
  • Enter path \\<target_machine_name>\C$. (Example: \\tester\c$)
  • Press enter. Open Winnt folder and try to save any file in there. If this is not possible, you do not have access to the C drive on target machine.

Ports used by remote installation
If you use firewall in your network, you need to allow communication on the following ports to install AVG remotely:

1. Ping (ICMP type 0 - Incoming echo request) - required to find a remote station in the network.

2. Microsoft Files and Printers Sharing (TCP ports 139, 445 and UDP ports 137,138) - required to copy AvgAgent tool on the remote computer using Admin$ sharing.

3. RPC: Remote Procedure Call (TCP and UDP port 135) - required to launch AvgAgent service on the target PC.

4. Communication on TCP port number 6150 for AVG Network Installer Wizard and AvgAgent common communication. Using this port AVG Network Installer Wizard controls the AvgAgent tool and uploads the installation files of AVG onto the target station.

Note:
We recommend you to save the source AVG installation package on the local hard disk of the computer with AVG Remote Administration to prevent possible timeouts during the network installation. Please always use the latest installation package which can be downloaded from the Download section.

AVG Agent can’t be installed remotely on Windows XP Home

This operating system doesn't support remote access, therefore it is necessary to install AVG Agent locally, e.g. by using a Logon Script. The installation of AVG can be done remotely, but only if AVG Agent is installed on the station manually.

The AvgAgent can be installed as follows:

  • copy avgagent.exe and avgagent_*.lng files to a folder on the station
    • these files are stored in Program Files\AVG\AVG9 Admin\Console by default
  • run command avgagent.exe -install -start

Then it will be possible to contact the station using the AVG Network Installer Wizard and install AVG remotely.

Restart of stations after remote installation

When installing AVG remotely using the AVG Network Installer WIzard, please bear in mind that a restart is always required and executed automatically in case there is AVG 8.x on the target stations. Sometimes the restart is needed also when reinstalling AVG 9.0. The restart is needed because all old AVG services and drivers are scheduled for removal upon restart, and new drivers and services cannot be started due to this. The result of reinstallation without restart would be an unprotected station.

In general, it is recommended to install AVG remotely during off-peak hours, and enable the option "Reboot the computer after finishing AVG 9.0 setup if needed". This will ensure that the computer will be unprotected for the shortest possible time.

More information about replacing AVG 8.x clients and server by AVG 9.0 in a network is available in the FAQ topic 2110.

No time displayed in reboot warning after remote installation on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 2008

If you are installing AVG remotely to stations running either Window Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 2008, there will be no time displayed in the reboot warning.

The reboot warning is displayed in case, that the finished installation of AVG requires restart of the computer. Normally, the time specified in the AVG network installer Wizard is displayed as countdown on the station (to inform user about the reboot).

On the mentioned systems warning is displayed depending on used OS theme. If certain themes are used, only message warning users about restart is displayed with no countdown. However, the set time is still used.

This is a feature of these systems.
