Can autism be prevented?

According to Dr. Robert Melillo, co-founder of the Brain Balance Achievement Centers, the epidemic increase in the number of people diagnosed with autism can not be explained based on genetic reasons only. He said that it would take genes much longer to create such an increase in numbers. He believes that autism is often a result of environmental factors coupled with genetic factors.

He said that some of the major factors related to autism are: diet, exercise an inflammation in the body.

In his book he talks about ways to prevent having a child with autism. Here he mentioned just a few like:

1- taking vitamins a few months before pregnancy and a month during pregnancy (lowers the risk by 60%)

2- conditions like: obesity, hypertension, and diabetes (increases the risk by 60%)

Besides, there are 2 myths about autism:

1- it is a purely gentic disorder

2- children with autism can never get better and cannot be helped

The above points have not been proven.

On the other hand, he believes that the brain regulates the immune system and the digestive system. Food allergies and immunity issues all start in the brain, that in turn affects the body. So, understanding how the brain works can help prevent getting affected by these issues.
