UK Area Codes and Phone Number Information

028 area code

Northern Ireland phone numbers

The 028 area code is for the whole of Northern Ireland including Belfast.

Within Northern Ireland, local landline telephone numbers are eight digits long. The first two of these digits give more precise details about which area a number is likely to be from.

The areas covered by each block of 028 numbers are as follows:

Most 028 numbers are for normal Northern Ireland landlines but be aware that, as is the case for all UK area codes, such numbers may also be used for services without any physical link to the area. (More info)

028 number call costs

028 numbers are normal, landline numbers charged at standard rates.

Formatting an 028 number

028 numbers should be displayed in the format 028 xxxx xxxx or (028) xxxx xxxx, with the first space always placed between '028' and the eight-digit local number.

For international callers, use: +44 28 xxxx xxxx.

Badly-written or misquoted numbers such as '02890  xxxxxx' are incorrect.

Area code history

The 028 area code has existed since April 2000, when it replaced the dozens of different area codes in use across Northern Ireland.

1995Northern Ireland uses a variety of local area codes of different lengths in the format (01xxx) and (01xxxx). Local numbers are either 5 or 6 digits long, depending on the area.
2000All local area codes withdrawn within Northern Ireland, replaced with single 028 code. Landline numbers lengthened to eight digits long in all areas.
2005Local numbers beginning '95' added.
2014Local numbers beginning '72' and '96' added.
